Description

The trumpet (trublja, trumpeta) was made of long bent pieces of wood joined together by wooden rims so as to prevent the instrument breaking and cracking. In order to achieve loudness the instrument has to be submersed first, so the shepherds usually put it into a pond or creek until it swells up.

Note

These trumpets were usually made by the shepherds, hunters, and farmers, and it was used in the mountains and forests as means of calling out to each other.
“In many places they announce the coming frost by trumpeting, especially in those places where there are gardens, like in Bulgaria” (Kuhač 1878: 31), and is trying to confirm the presence of this instrument among all the Slavs, citing a Czech adage “to trumpet of frost” (ibid.)
