Description

The diple are made of maple wood. The diple consist of a chanter onto which an annular part and a stock are attached. The bottom is tin wrapped. Six fields and finger-holes are turned on the upper section of the chanter. Two cylindrical pipes are bored through the chanter. There are two clarinet-type mouthpieces inside the stock.

Note

A heart-shaped head (eyes, nose, mouth, ears) is carved in the middle of the stock. The head is carved using the low relief technique. The annular part is engraved with knife cuts. The upper (wider) edge of the windcap is decorated in the same way. Its surface is decorated using the wood-carving technique named rovašenje (engraving) (same as the annular part). The decorations make up the letter U (turned upside down). Low cut horizontal parallel lines are carved between the embedded and engraved ornaments.

“The skilled diple players play their “patriotic songs” in their villages for their neighbors, in special situations the instrument is accompanied by folk dances.” (Širola 1942: 128)
