The Collection of Musical Instruments
The pan flute is made from twenty-one reed pipes of various sizes, but of similar thickness. The smallest pipes are at the ends, and the biggest one is in the middle. This arrangement sets it apart from other pan flutes crafted in other cultures and places. The pipes are interconnected with two planks and tied with a rope.
Reed pipes are cleaned on the inside with a small stick or thin piece of reed, and the tops are smoothened for the player not to hurt his lips. The pan flute was made and played in Hrvatsko Zagorje, Bilogora, mostly as children’s and shepherds’ instruments.
