The Collection of Musical Instruments
The pan flute is an instrument made of 15 reed pipes arranged in one row one next to the other, interconnected with a plank and a string. The longest pipe, which produces the deepest tone, is in the middle, and shorter pipes, which produce higher tones, are at the ends.
The pan flute was primarily used as a shepherd’s instrument. It was made by the shepherds themselves to waste time during grazing. This kind of instruments is not well adjusted and it does not sound well when combined with other instruments. It was often made as a souvenir. This instrument was a souvenir purchased at a fair in Zagreb in 1913. It was donated to the Museum in 1919.
